Game Recap

It was a deceiving final score line but the fact remains that the Cherokee Warriors fell to the Roswell Hornets by a final of 3-0 Friday night. With a state playoff spot on the line, the Warriors gave Roswell all they could handle. Cherokee played with heart, focus and passion but could not overcome a devastating free kick late in the second half. To recap, a Cherokee win would have created a 3 way tie for the 4th and final playoff spot in the region. The Warriors knew that and had a focused week of practice, preparing to go out and prove them selves. It would also be an added benefit to play spoiler to the Hornets’ senior night festivities. Both teams created chances in the first half but thanks to some big saves from sophomore keeper David Trinidad, the score remained 0-0 at the half. Both teams made their adjustments and kicked off a very entertaining second half. In the 61st minute the scoreless draw was broken off a free kick just outside the 18. As the Warriors were getting organized, the Hornets took advantage of the chaos and laced a beautiful free kick into the far top corner of the goal. Trinidad made a tremendous effort to make the save but was caught out of position trying to organize his wall. As Cherokee regrouped and pushed forward to try and even the match, Roswell was able to counter and double their lead to two goals. Despite some possession and chances at the end of the match, Cherokee was not able to net a goal as the Hornets finished off the match with just two seconds remaining on the clock for a final of 3-0. I know I speak for the entire Warrior Nation when I say how proud we all are of the effort, grit and determination our boys showed. It is a tough loss but the season is not over for the team. With three games remaining in the final week of the season (two of them home and one region) there is still a lot to play for. The win brought Roswell to 6-8-1 overall (3-2 in region play) while the loss dropped Cherokee to 4-8-1 overall (1-3 in region play). The boys host region rival Walton Monday night as they finish the game that began a month ago but was delayed due to weather. That game will pick up 15 minutes in with the score Walton 2 Cherokee 0. Come support our boys on one of their final home games! They will be ready to surprise some people.
